Not Shown in the Movie

Time Period #1

Abe #1 invents time travel and tells Aaron #1
They go through days of time travel as they invest in the stock market
Aaron #1 discovers the Failsafe Box
Abe #1 attends or plans to attend a party where Rachel is
Rachel’s ex-boyfriend pulls out a gun but no one is hurt
Aaron #1 knowing of the party decides to go back in time to be the ‘hero’ of the party (like wanting to punch Platz, it has no actual value.)
Aaron #1 uses the Failsafe Box and takes a box back in time with him creating a fourth box for his own use as his own failsafe

Shown in the Movie

Time Period #2

Aaron #2 drugs Aaron #1 before Aaron #1 even finds out about time travel
Abe #1 invents time travel and tells Aaron #2 (thinking he is telling Aaron #1)
Abe #1 and Aaron #2 go through days of time travel as they invest in the stock market
Aaron #2 records all conversations
Aaron #2 goes to the party to be the ‘hero’ (Abe isn’t there)
Something goes wrong, possibly something happens later to Rachel (At a guess at some point after the party Rachel is tracked down by ex-boyfriend and harmed or killed) and for some reason Granger is told about the ability to go back. Granger goes back in time and knowing that what happens is tied to what Aaron has done and follows him
The recursive problem arises and Abe #1 uses the Failsafe box to go back in time to set it right.
Aaron #2 uses the Failsafe Box and takes a box back in time with him creating a fourth box for his own use as his own failsafe

Time Period #3

Aaron #3 drugs Aaron #1 before Aaron #1 even finds out about time travel but runs into Aaron #2. They fight and while Aaron #3 loses, still Aaron #2 leaves him with the recordings.
Abe #2 drugs Abe #1 before Abe #1 even knows about time travel
Abe #2 goes to tell Aaron about time travel thinking he will be telling Aaron #1 but he is actually talking to Aaron #3 who has the recordings and explains the situation above (after the ‘shown in movie’ part.)
This time the party goes smoothly with Aaron as the hero (and possibly ex-boyfriend jailed keeping Rachel safe)
Aaron #3 and Abe #2 are in a past period before either of their ‘alter egos’ knew about time-travel (since they’ve kept them out of commission.)
They have not spent their time playing the stock market (or engaging in other forms of betting) and so have almost no money (instead they’ve been busy setting the recursive problem right and getting the situation at the party where Aaron is the hero to go smoothly)
Aaron #3 leaves on an airplane and Abe #2 sticks around to make sure neither Abe #1 nor Aaron #1 develop time travel

I have seen several timelines posted which describe Abe#1 showing Aaron #1 about the time travel. But in the movie, it can only be Abe #2 who tells Aaron #1 about it. Abe#1 already went into the machine and back in time, and then he catches up with Aaron #1 and brings him to the storage locker. It is Abe #2 who hands the binoculars to Aaron #1 so that he can see Abe #1 entering the building.

Do they have to go back to uhaul at the end of the day or do they just go back if so why not some chintz star trek beam special effects? Also, has Shane Carruth posted?, i'm starting questions for Shane Carruth forum right now.

I like the timeline that was put together in another thread:

My kids and I have spent the past 2 days talking about nothing
but this movie. I hope one of these timelines answers our
questions! Smile

Where did the above link come from? Someone obviously put a lot of work into it and I like the way it is set up (as opposed to some of the other diagrams posted, it accounts for days and times as well as timelines). However, I am inclined to think that it's not quite as complicated as this diagram makes out (which is NOT to say that it isn't complicated!) First off, I don't think that there are more than three Aarons. I think the movie poses the possibility of more than three, but I don't think that in tracing out the events of the movie (i.e. "putting the pieces together") that we need account for more than three.

You seem to have posted quite a bit on the board. Have you seen the above link? What did you make of it?

The actual timeline is probably more complicated than that timeline which I re-posted here earlier. Someone rightly pointed out that that timeline doesn't even cover the fact that the Aaron(0) in the timeline should actually be Aaron(3) or so, because that Aaron which we see Abe explaining the Box to, is listening to a pre-recorded tape of the conversation they're having. Which means he's been through at least once before.

Well, for what my opinion is worth, I think it's a great diagram!

I haven't traced it through scene by scene myself, though. I disagree where it says "a new timeline is created" or "no one gets out of the box", but that helps with the diagramming. Also, I agree with khu, I think that if you trace Aaron's movements closely, things start to fall apart. And we don't know how many loops Aaron had to make to "fix" the party.
